Kotze thought that trying to find the cell phone in the bust taxi rank was an exercise in futility.

“With so many people coming and going, including a bus, I believed that it was a waste of time, but I gave my details to Makakavhula who seemed determined. He promised they would not rest until they caught him,” he said.

The officers continued to patrol until the happened upon two suspicious people. The approached them and after a brief search, they discovered one of them had the cellphone.

The two victims were able to unlock the phone's security pattern on the first try confirming it was their phone.

“To be honest, when I saw the man running with my phone I just thought my phone was gone,” Helen admitted.

Kotze said that the incident had helped him restore his faith in the police and his only experiences in the past were of being stopped by the Metro police and being handed a ticket.
