On September 13, 1950, he was born in Chicago, Illinois, US, and grew up in West Bloomfield Township and then moved to Birmingham, Michigan. He went to Brother Rice High School, a suburban Roman-Catholic all-boys school in Bloomfield Hills, in 1977. Chris Hansen height is 1.88m.

Chris Hansen NBC career began when he was still at Michigan State University. Halfway into his senior year, he landed a job at WILX, a TV station owned by NBC, and joined full time after graduation. During this time he also worked for several local radio stations in Michigan. In 1982, he moved to Tampa, Florida, to work for WFLA-TV. In 1988, he went to work for WDIV-TV in Detroit, Michigan, as an investigative reporter.

In May 1993, he joined NBC News as a correspondent for Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric. In 1997, he worked as a correspondent for several segments of Dateline. He covered several stories, including the Oklahoma bombing, the Columbine High School massacre, the 9/11 attacks and exposed arms merchants linked to Osama Bin Laden. The renowned American journalist also hosted the TCAP, an American TV series, where he partly filmed with a hidden camera to expose potential sex predators. He and his team baited adult men to a sting house by impersonating minors of ages between 13 and 15. The TV show premiered in November 2004 and featured 12 investigations held all across the US.
