"I, Herman Mashaba, a citizen of the Republic of South Africa, nominate our very own South African Frontline Doctors, Nurses & Ancillary Workers for the Nobel Peace Prize, instead of Cubans Doctors as proposed by @PresidencyZA."

Some tweeps seemed to be in full agreement with Mashaba while others defended the president, stating that they do believe the Cuban medical professionals deserve praise and recognition.

@KelebogileJacq1 responded with:

"I like you Sir but I think you are being petty, Cuba has done a lot for many countries during these difficult times. Our doctors have only helped us with the assistance of Cuba. Be fair like usual don't be like other politicians."

@MolfDaphney said:

"This is absolute nonsense, what did the Cuban doctors do? Cause they came here to murder South Africans. Worse, our South African doctors and nurses did their best to safe peoples lives until the Cuban doctors came, people died like flies."

@KristusM tweeted:

"It’s always good to keep quiet if you don’t know much about health practices or medicine. Cuban docs have done so much in this pandemic and it’s not just their role in SA that got them nominated, but globally. Knowledge is key. Just a little research would help you."

"How many doctors did we send to help out in other countries Mr Mashaba? This is the lowest of the low, stop playing politics where there's no need. I'm very disappointed."

Earlier, Briefly.co.za reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke about South Africa nominating the Cuban Medical Brigade for a Nobel Peace Prize during his address to the nation. The president went on to praise and give thanks to Cuba for deploying 3 700 medical professionals throughout the world.

Ramaphosa also thanked the government and the people of Cuba. He stated that the Cuban medical professionals across the globe had treated over 38 000 Covid patients by November last year.

South Africans have now taken to social media to discuss whether or not they believe the Cuban medical professionals deserve the Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
