Rich Mnisi, a South African designer making waves on the international fashion scene, has been trending online because of a piece in his new collection.

The garment is a Tsonga skirt called a 'xibelani' and traditionally worn for dance performances. Many might recognise the skirt as the style is a favourite of Sho Madjozi's for when she performs.

The 'xibelani' that forms part of Rich Mnisi's collection is retailing for R59 999 which is what got the designer trending on social media.

The skirt is part of the luxury designer's Hiya Kaya collection and Mnisi paired it with a blouse that complements the colour scheme.

Social media users had mixed reactions to the price of the skirt. Some could not quite believe that the price tag was almost R60 000 when they were used to purchasing the garments for much less:

@hlali_xz: "I love Rich Mnisi but a Xibelani for 60k no ways"

Some other commenters were of the opinion that the skirt was well-priced because of its target market of people who purchase from luxury brands:

@naledimashishi: "I have no skin in the Rich Mnisi chat but I had to laugh when I saw someone argue everyone is hating because he’s Tsonga and it’s not his fault we’re all poor"
@TiyiBevhula: "If you find Rich Mnisi' products to be expensive, it means you are not the target market. He knows why his Xibelani skirt cost that much. Simple."

@justjusticeplz: "Tsonga style lol for R60000 Yoh ay I could just go to Limpompo straight lol joking, I love Mnisi’s work. He knows his target market"

There was some debate around cultural appropriation since the skirt is a traditional garment in the Tsonga culture, but many decided that since Mnisi is Tsonga himself that it was preferable for him to respectfully profit from the garment rather than a Western designer.

It was also added that the price tag was justified because fashion houses like Gucci and Louis Vuitton charge similar numbers for their designs:

@BiyelaBrian26: "But LV and Gucci do exactly what Rich Mnisi is doing"
@MadVee_98: "I would rather see Rich Mnisi sell the Xibelani for R60K than see the likes of Gucci, LV do it"
@Thabo_Maubane: "With such an outcry about the cost of Rich Mnisi’s Xibelane, I must commend him for understanding his value and also placing value on a garment that is very iconic in Africa before another Western designer did the same. We need to know our value as Africans."
