Zondo Commission of Inquiry Lays Criminal Charge Against Jacob Zuma

- The Zondo Commission of State Capture Inquiry has opted to lay a criminal charge against Jacob Zuma

- The Commission had ordered a summons and Zuma did not appear on the date that was scheduled

- Jacob Zuma snubbed the Commission and said that he will not be present because he has no "right to silence"

The Zondo Commission of Inquiry has declared that they will lay a criminal charge against former president Jacob Zuma for not appearing when he was scheduled to. Zuma was meant to appear before the Commission on 18 January 2021.

The Commission has also warned the former president to appear on 15 February 2021 or further action will be taken against him.

Jacob Zuma previously released a statement expressing that he would not be appearing before the Commission. The Constitutional Court had also intervened and stated that Zuma had to show face.

The Zondo Commission has said that Jacob Zuma thinks that he is above the law:

"He continues to enjoy the benefits that the Constitution grants to all former presidents in terms of his pension and other benefits paid for by taxpayers," they said in a statement.

The statement also touched on the matter of Jacob Zuma's personal swipes at Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Zondo said that he will handle that in a separate manner.

The reason why Jacob Zuma said he will not appear before the Commission is that he feels that he is not being given the leeway to staysilent in response to all the questions he is asked.

According to a report by IOL, Zuma's family has backed him and said that they will do their utmost best to prevent any arrests made against him. One of his sons, Edward, said that they are 100% behind him.

Briefly.co.za previously reported that EFF's Mbuyiseni Ndlozi called for Zuma's arrest for defying the Constitutional Court. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi of the Economic Freedom Fighters took to social media to call for the arrest of Jacob Zuma.

The ex-president had been told to appear in front of the Zondo Commission as it continues its inquiry into allegations of state capture.

Zuma was ordered to appear before the commission by the Constitutional Court but released a statement saying he did not intend to do so.
