Editor's note: Julius Malema was able to predict some important information regarding the Cabinet reshuffle way before Cyril Ramaphosa announced the changes. Briefly.co.za editor, Stefan Mack, investigates how Malema is getting his information.
Julius Malema knew with uncanny accuracy and detail the fate of some of the ministers in the Ramaphosa Cabinet.
He even boasted when the announcement was made Tweeting, "What's my name?"
It is obvious now that Malema has someone inside the ANC feeding him very sensitive information which is usually on a need to know basis and kept within the senior ranks of the party.
Last year he knew that Cyril Ramaphosa had won the ANC presidency before Jacob Zuma even knew.
There is almost no effort at the moment to try and figure out who is feeding Malema the info and has simply become accepted that he still has connections with the ruling party.
The Top Six held secret meetings while negotiating with Zuma to step down and Malema was revealing precise details of these meetings, this means that it could be someone within the Top Six who is feeding Malema the info.
A process of simple elimination can then be done:
- It’s unlikely that Gwede Mantashe would be sending WhatsApps to Malema.
- It’s even more improbable that Ace Magashule or Jessie Duarte could be chummy with the one man who has done the most to insult their former president, a leader they always resolutely defended.
- The stormy relationship between Malema and Ramaphosa, who took the final decision to expel the young firebrand and his other ANC Youth League comrades from the ANC, must surely also exclude the ANC president, and there are other reasons to find the idea of Ramaphosa feeding insider info to Malema absurd.
- The wily cat David Mabuza surely also isn’t a Malema confidant.
This leaves only ANC treasurer Paul Mashatile and he is the logical choice as he ticks all the boxes. Mashatile was one of Zuma's biggest critics and the Gauteng ANC was also opposed the Zuma's leadership style.
Now there isn't any hard evidence and at this stage, it is merely conjecture but it appears that as soon as Mashatile knows something so does Malema.
Why is it still happening?
This now begs the question why hasn't Ramaphosa done something about it, perhaps had a quiet word with Mashatile and asked him to stop.
There could be a number of reasons, perhaps it serves Ramaphosa's interests at the moment that Malema has an inside loop.
It could also be a slow trap closing around Malema and that Mashatile might feed him some inaccurate information.
It could also be a plan to woo the EFF back into the ANC's embrace and with it the necessary numbers to take back the metros.
Malema would be well rewarded if he was able to present his old friends with such a prize. What the rest of the EFF will make of this potential scenario is unknown at this point.
