Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has condemned the actions of the Fish Hoek beach protestors. His criticism comes after one of the protestors pulled the mask off the face of reporter Monique Mortlock, who had been trying to get an interview.

Winde also criticised the protestors who refused to wear masks and follow Covid-19 health and safety regulations, adding that the violation of the regulations would not be tolerated by him or the Western Cape government.

“I strongly condemn the abuse of journalists by protesters at Fish Hoek Beach as well as the complete disregard for Covid-19 regulations and the law," wrote Winde in a statement on Twitter.

A group of community members gathered at the beach this weekend to protest against the nationwide lockdown that started early last year and has seen a number of restrictions placed on South Africans by the government.

Meanwhile, locals have had this to say about the premier's statements:

@AnthonyVerwey said:

"It is no longer a constitutional democracy when the constitution and bill of rights are suspended."

@jostephan said:

"There are no risk assessments for any of the lockdown regulations. We have been asking, no response. Not a single risk analysis has been presented to prove that any of the regulations change the purported outcomes. They can’t even verify that a PCR test is reliable."

@shwnd said:

"The rule of law is a joke in South Africa. It is selectively applied. Besides I recall something about a court case where lockdown restrictions were declared unconstitutional. Also NPIs don't work in a meaningful way, so these tweets are pointless at any rate."

Briefly.co.za also reported that Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has called upon President Cyril Ramaphosa to convene a special President's Coordinating Council meeting. The Premier noted that there has been a steady decline in active cases in the Western Cape:

“We are saying, we don’t have to go all the way, but we have to find a happy medium. At the moment, the balance is out. We have also motivated this through showing the impact on jobs in the province.
"We have put sufficient healthcare response in place; the extra beds that we have put in place; how we managed the oxygen; how we have managed through the peak with bringing on extra staff, et cetera.”
