- Sarel van der Merwe is known as the South Coast’s snake wrangler
- Sarel was recently called out to a home in Murchison where he caught the biggest black mamba of his career
- The snake measured 4.1 metres and Sarel says it was incredibly powerful and grumpy
Sarel van der Merwe has become renowned on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal as the person to call if you happen to bump into an unwanted snake at your home or business.
Last week was a busy week for Sarel and on Thursday he caught the biggest black mamba of his career. The mammoth snake was measured at 4.1 meters long!
Sarel says that particular snake was his third call-out of the day, he had already removed a snake from a shop and was busy removing another black mamba when he got an urgent call to go to a home in Murchison.
Briefly.co.za gathered that the mammoth snake was hiding behind a mattress in one of the bedrooms. Sarel says he knew catching the big snake was going to be a challenge because it lifted itself off the ground when he approached it.
Sarel says he didn’t realise just how big the snake was but he knew immediately that it was a very grumpy and incredibly powerful specimen.
He says every time he approaches a black mamba he takes special precautions because the snake is one of the most venomous on the planet. Sarel says the snake put up a big fight and did not want to be placed inside the rescue bag.
Sarel warned that this time of the year sees an increase in snake activity, this is due to snakes hunting in preparation for their winter hibernation period. He urged residents of the South Coast to be on the lookout for snakes.
He added that people should not remove the animals themselves, but should contact their local snake catcher.
