The Red Berets have issued a statement voicing their concerns over the number of officers deployed to an event that will be attended by a far smaller number of people:

"The ruling party, in a shallow obsession with colonial ceremony has deployed South African Police Services to Parliament to rubber stamp their wasteful expenditure on the State of the Nation Address."

The EFF is adamant that this is nothing less than an abuse of power on the government's behalf, commenting that:

"The deployment of police in their numbers to SONA is nothing but an abuse of power and represents the highest level of arrogance, as it only serves to distract police resources from combatting violent crime in the service of the small egos of Cyril Ramaphosa and his cronies."

The EFF insists that the virtual nature of the address has greatly reduced the potential threats, questioning the expenditure:

"Why should taxpayers money be unnecessarily wasted for an individual like Ramaphosa, who can't even guarantee simple life-saving resources such as vaccines which are desperately needed by South Africans."

The party has slammed Ramaphosa for 'abusing and wasting state resources', adamant that it is nothing but a show of corruption:

"It is nothing but a show to legitimize corruption because a State of the Nation Address that will have little to no attendance should not require any expenditure of tax payers money."

Meanwhile, Briefly.co.za reported that Cabinet has met ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Addressed and approved an extension of the national state of disaster.

Gathering on Wednesday, Cabinet opted to extend this period from 15 February to 15 March and this move will soon be officially gazetted.

While Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has opted to move ahead with the extension, the move has not been warmly welcomed by all.

The many extensions have come under fire with some feeling that the Disaster Management Act gives the state the power to act as they like for an extended period of time.
