Ramaphosa and Mkhize Tearless After Covid Jab: "Um, Hurry Up"

- The announcement of Ramaphosa and Mkhize's vaccination was made earlier today and a video was shared

- The minister and president took their vaccines in a dignified manner but South Africans are still concerned

President Cyril Ramaphosa and Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize received their Covid-19 vaccines on Wednesday, 17 February. The vaccinations of the president and minister were recorded and shared on various social networking sites.

Ramaphosa's process took a bit longer than Mkhize, due to the sole fact that he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt. The president and minister both took their vaccines like utter champs with not flinching visible.

South Africans spoke about the vaccine expiry date as well as the lack of social distancing in the videos shared to Twitter.

Earlier, Briefly.co.za reported that Ramaphosa and Mkhize would take the vaccine as a 'show of faith'. Ramaphosa said that the government is pleased to be able to begin vaccination by mid-February as promised. This comes despite the AstraZeneca vaccine proving inefficient against the 501Y.V2 variant that is dominant in SA at the moment.

The President congratulated all the officials involved in ensuring the nation's response to the situation was a swift one:

"I would like to congratulate the Vaccine Inter-Ministerial Committee, the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Vaccines, Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize and his team, and the Medical Research Council for responding so rapidly and effectively to this challenge."

Ramaphosa further called upon the leaders in South Africa to get inoculated publically:

"We have called on leaders in various sectors and parts of the country to lead by example and get inoculated publicly. We will therefore witness some Premiers, MECs and leaders from civil society, religious formations and traditional leadership being vaccinated in all provinces."
