- South Africans seem to like forming associations for everything from political sympathisers, to fans of fruit, so it should come as no surprise that the country has a Boyfriends Association
- BASA and BAOSA might in fact be the same association with two different acronyms, although judging by social media posts in their respective names, they do differ somewhat
- One South African twitter personality has stated in his bio that he is President of BAOSA
Briefly.co.za learned that South African men on social media decided they should form an association for boyfriends to keep each other honest, on the top of their game, and generally living their best life.
As amazing as it might seem that there is an actual association for boyfriends, it is worth remembering that South Africa is also the country that has a union for the unemployed workers, and a variety of groups formed to create collective action for everything from excusing racism to eating mangoes.
Last year in August, which is the month South Africans celebrate women’s month, the Boyfriends Association of South Africa (BASA) facebook page announced its members where taking a vow to treat women better.
Using the hashtag Man Up & Stand Up, the “executive team” of SABA announced their intention to act like gentlemen in the interests of women having a better and more comfortable existence. “Don't be that guy in the bus or train sitting down while a woman next to you looks like she's about to pass out and you let her stand. Man up & Stand Up” they said in their Women’s Month post.
Meanwhile, on twitter, a user with the handle @Lofty_K calling himself, Broke Billionaire, says in his bio that he is “President of BAOSA (Boyfriends Association Of South Africa)”
Attempts by Briefly.co.za to confirm this, however came to naught. However it does seem that perhaps there are in fact, two associations that differ somewhat not only in their acronym, but also in their ethos.
