Brian Themba is said to be leaving the set of Muvhango, after producers found they had no ideas for his character, Ranthumeng.

The veteran songwriter and music producer, has featured in Generations and The Lion King musical

Insiders claimed the producers’ decision to cut the character was prompted by the departure of Ranthumeng’s co-star, Sindi Dlathu, who played Thandaza Mokoena, Briefly.co.za gathered.

“It was always hectic for his character because he was always associated with the Thandaza role," the informant said.

“Producers have been struggling for months to keep his role despite signs that it wasn’t working after they wrote off the Thandaza role.

“He’s still shooting, but his character will be over soon.”

Themba confirmed the rumours, but wouldn’t give details.

“The best person to speak to is the Muvhango publicist. We’re busy preparing for a proper exit from the show. And I’ll call you when I’m ready to talk,” he said.

But Ranthumeng is not the only character being written out of the show.

Other cast members soon to be leaving include Raphael Griffiths (Vusi), and Nqobile Ndlovu (Bongi), who are joining the new e.tv drama series, Imbewu (The Seed).

Another source claimed: “Some of the characters left to join Duma KaNdlovu in Imbewu, but Ranthumeng isn’t joining the new show.

“I guess he’s returning to music or the stage. For now, there’s no production I know of that he’s joining.”

Muvhango executive producer Duma Ka Ndlovu could not be reached for comment.
