A Twitter user took to the internet to share her shocking experience. @Aluwei was driving on the N7 when she spotted something that caught her eye.

An old South African flag, often referred to as the apartheid flag is on sale. Someone has hung it over a fence along the N7 highway.

It is not known who is trying to sell the flag or for how much but it is a disturbing sight to many people who have asked for it to be removed, according to IOL.

However, it is not so simple, people have protests the use of the flag and in an Equality Court ruling in 2019, it was deemed hate speech to gratuitously display the flag. Judge Phineas Mojapelo made the ruling, but the exact definition of the gratuitous display was not outlined.

This means that it is not clear if it is hate speech to display the flag for sale.

Secretary of The SA Vexillological Association (a group interested in the study of flags), Bruce Berry, said that selling the flag is not illegal. He explained that old police flags, old army flags, even the Nazi flag are allowed to be sold.

He did, however, say that if the flag is publicly displayed and people are offended by it and the person who has displayed the flag refuses to remove it, then a case could be made.

Earlier, Briefly.co.za reported that apartheid-era scientist Dr Wouter Basson, also known as Dr Death, was in charge of the governments chemical and biological weapons research dubbed Project Coast between 1980 and 1990.
