Luyanda Ntshangase of Maritzburg United has been in the intensive care unit (ICU) since last Thursday when he was struck by lightning.
He was struck while on the field with his teammates. He and three other players from a SAB league local football club, Arsenal FC were injured.
The three other players only suffered mild injuries while Ntshangase suffered burns to his chest. He remains on a ventilator at hospital and no official word has been released on his condition according to the Maritzburg United managing director and club chairperson Farook Kadodia.
“We visited him yesterday [Saturday] and the doctor said they would continue to keep him connected to the respiratory machine for another day or two.The doctor said he will only be able to assess any damage once he’s regained consciousness,” Kadodia said.
Briefly.co.za has gathered that the incident has left the other players in shock. Ntshangase has received a torrent of messages on social media wishing him well and a speedy recovery according to news24.com.
Ntshangase has featured regularly on the club's Multichoice Diski Challenge team and things were looking up for him when he was promoted to the first team last season.
