Today is the birthday of Pick n Pay's founder Raymond Ackerman. In celebration of his big 90th, the Pick n Pay team headed to Facebook to share a heartwarming birthday post with the man who made it all possible for them.

"Happy 90th birthday to our founder Mr Ackerman. It’s the father of our house’s 90th birthday on Wednesday, 10 March. So, in celebration of this special occasion, Mr Raymond Ackerman, we want to say a big THANK YOU for all you’ve done!"

1. Mr Ackerman purchased Pick n Pay from its owner, Jack Goldin in the 1960s.

2. Mr Ackerman stepped down as chairman of the giant supermarket in 2010.

3. Ackermans had been founded just after World War I by his father Gus, but was sold to the Greatermans group in 1940.

4. Ackerman won the Outstanding Young South African award in 1965 along with Gary Player, and in 1966 at the age of 35.

5. The Pick 'n Pay Group employs more than 30,000 people in several African countries.

Raymond acquired a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Cape Town. As a 20-year-old young man, he took up a job as a trainee at Ackerman’s store. It was a clothing retail outfit that was started by his father, Gus Ackerman. Later, the company was acquired by the Greatermans group.
