The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has labelled Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba as a pathological liar and said he had a habit of contradicting himself.

On Tuesday during a media briefing, Gigaba shockingly claimed that the Guptas were not South African citizens because they refused to give-up their Indian citizenship.

"After lying to a court of law, Gigaba has once more lied about the citizenship status of the Guptas," EFF National Spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said.

Brieflly.co.za discovered that Atul Gupta was issued with a South African passport on 31 July 2015. Only South African citizens can apply for passports. Atul Gupta is also a registered voter with the IEC.

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs was initially told that Atul Gupta was granted citizenship by Gigaba himself. This occurred after the family was initially denied naturalisation. Gigaba used his power as Minister of Home Affairs to approve the request.

It appears that Gigaba is now contradicting himself by claiming that the Guptas are not citizens but do have permanent residence status.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has also expressed its shock and surprise by Gigaba’s announcement. The party said it would summon Gigaba to appear before the portfolio committee to provide clarity on the matter.

The EFF said it would ask the Public Prosecutor to investigate the matter.
