Legendary Status: John Kani Discovers Street Named After Him

- South African actor John Kani recently realised that a there is a street named after him in Gauteng

John Kani is one South Africa’s most beloved actors. The thespian was pleasantly surprised recently when he learned that there’s a street in Gauteng named after him.

Kani took a picture standing in front of the street sign and posted it on Twitter. He captioned the post:

“My son, who is an artist and I went to deliver a painting to a client who lives in Eden Park Alberton, and what a pleasant surprise.”
“A street in my name. Thank you to the Ekurhuleni government for the honour. Also honoured was Sipho Sepamla and Achmat Dangor.”

Social media users were also happy to see Kani getting the recognition he deserves. Others were surprised that Kani was not formally informed about the name change. Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said:

“You deserve it @JohnKani2. You contributed immensely to the midwifery behind the democracy we have, unlike some of the names I’ve seen in Pretoria. #Congratulations”

Luazay_Mbuli said:

“So they named a whole street after you and couldn't locate you anywhere in the face of the earth to inform you! Asambe siyophahla khona...”

Mivusiwe said:

“That is a surprise to me - the fact that it was a surprise to you! I would think that you would be formally informed before a street or any landmark is named after you! I'm very surprised!!”

Meanwhile Briefly.co.za reported that Dr John Kani has been honoured with a Golden Elephant Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the performing arts scene in Mzansi. Kani was recognised by Word of Mouth Pictures for his contribution in the arts industry. Word of Mouth is the production company behind one of Mzansi's popular telenovelas titled Muvhango.

Muvhango executive producer Duma ka Ndlovu presented the award to the veteran actor during a recent ceremony hosted in his honour. Ka Ndlovu took to Instagram and shared a snap of the Black Panther actor receiving the award from himself and Muvhango producer Herbert Hadebe. Ka Ndlovu captioned his post:

Actress Phindile Gwala took to ka Ndlovu's comment section to share her opinion on Word of Mouth Pictures recognising Dr Kani with the award. She wrote:

"Well-deserved." Ka Ndlovu's follower on the photo-sharing app sibongilendawoengel said: "Congratulations."
