The former Minister of Sport and later Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula has resigned as an African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament (MP).
The ANC confirmed the news via its official Twitter page.
Mbalula was dumped as Minister of Police last month when President Cyril Ramaphosa reshuffled his cabinet. Mbalula was replaced by Bheki Cele.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Mbalula has resigned as an MP to allow him to focus on his new role at ANC headquarters. He will serve as the ANC’s head of elections towards the crucial 2019 general election.
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said the ANC wanted Mbalula to give his full attention to his new role at Luthuli House in order to help the party retain its majority in next year’s election.
“To allow the ANC to increase its relevance among the electorate," Mabe said.
The ANC said it was confident that Mbalula would secure a landslide victory at the 2019 polls.
