Confident Al Ahly boss Pitso Mosimane is hoping to use his CAF Champions League success with Mamelodi Sundowns as a reference to his current situation in Egypt.

The Red Devils failed to finish their group stage assignments at the top of the standings and the former Masandawana manager says what’s important is to reach the quarter-finals.

Mosimane had been in charge of the Brazilians when they were booted out of the group stages back in 2016 but CAF found AS Vita Club guilty of fielding an ineligible player.

Resulting from the decision to charge the Congolese club, Sundowns were reinstated into the knockout stages and they went on to lift the continental trophy for the first time in history.

Media reports suggest that ‘Jingles’ is looking to emulate that feat with the reigning African champions after finishing second behind the unbeaten Simba SC. Said Mosimane, as per KickOff.com:

"I hoped Al Ahly would top the group, but the Vita Club match in Cairo witnessed unusual things that affected the result, but the most important thing was achieved, which is qualifying for the quarter-finals.
"Last season, Al Ahly qualified for the quarter-finals, after drawing with Al-Hilal in the final round of the group stage and they end up winning the title. Topping the group is important, but it does not guarantee to lift the title."

Meanwhile, the draw for the upcoming knockout stages is yet to be conducted but many will hope to see Mosimane facing his former club.

Taking a look at Sundowns under coach Manqoba Mngqithi, the Brazilians are set to face CR Belouizdad at home on Friday afternoon, 9 April.

Sundowns are already through to the quarter-finals after completing the round without a defeat; they will look to finish in style with a convincing victory at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

In other news, 'Jingles' has been recommended to take over as the new Bafana Bafana coach and headhunted by the group of people who are responsible for finding the next coach for the South African football team.

The South African Football Association's (SAFA) National Executive Committee will be informed by the SAFA technical team that Mosimane is the man for the job.

Briefly News previously reported that Mngqithi is open to face the Kagiso-born manager and urged his troops to remain calm and leave emotions aside.

Mngqithi said they don't have sleepless nights over the possibility of meeting Ahly. The Brazilians, as Sundowns are known to their fans, have amassed four consecutive victories in Group B plus a single draw.
