Female Sports Commentator Boldly Breaking Barriers in a Male Dominated Field

At 21, Joyce Annoh Yeboah is thriving in a male-dominated profession as a female sports commentator despite the challenges women in the field face.

Though she has found a way to cope with the difficulty, she combines her work as a sports commentator with her education at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), where she's pursuing a programme to advance her career.

While growing up, Yeboah had nurtured her childhood passion of becoming a footballer but had to abandon the dream after she fell sick at the time.

Affectionately called Ephiya Empress on radio, Yeboah who now works with Angel FM (ABN) had a difficult teenage life with her education, attending over four senior high schools before finally completing Garden City Commercial School in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

In an interview with popular Ghanaian blogger, Felix Adomako Mensah of Zionfelix TV, Joyce Annoh Yeboah opened up about how her journey to becoming one of Ghana's only female commentator begun.

Yeboah disclosed that her unplanned journey to niching a career in the male-dominated field was amplified by social media.

Then a first-year student at GIJ, she participated in a football tournament and clinched the coveted prize as the Woman of the Tournament for her performance, winning Ghc300.00.

Yeboah established contact with the organiser of the programme and later her destiny was aligned to famous sports presenter, Saddick Adams also known as Sports Obama.

After nearly a year as a female commentator on radio, 21-year-old Yeboah who has shattered the glass ceiling shares her story in the interview below.
