- Zakes Bantwini lost his mom to cancer
- He recalled how expensive cancer treatment was
- He therefore resolved to build a cancer hospital to help others
Zakes Bantwini is finally close to achieving his long stated goal of building a cancer hospital in memory of his late mother.
Zakes said he realised just how expensive cancer treatment is when his mom's treatment was almost discontinued because her medical aid was exhausted.
Speaking to Times Live, he said he resolved to embark on the project to ensure fewer patients are turned away because of lack of money.
The musician said he has been fundraising for a while now and is currently negotiating with traditional leaders to get land for the hospital. He said:
This is something I have been passionate about for many years but the ball is rolling now. I will soon be registering my foundation and hopefully soon we can start building.

Zakes recalled his mother's experience:
Cancer treatment is expensive. I remember the doctors telling my mom's medical aid that she would stay in hospital even though she had exhausted her funds. It was heartbreaking.
How can hospitals turn people away because of money. If you are from a rural area you don't even have money and now you have to pay serious money before you even start treatment. It is not right.
He also hopes to build more hospitals after the first one is up. He plans to establish the second one in the Eastern Cape.
