The Honolulu police department (HPD) are doubling down on their claims that their officers acted correctly in the fatal shooting of South African citizen Lindani Myeni on Wednesday 14 April.

The department even went as far as to call the officers 'brave'. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has slammed the HPD and labelled the shooting a 'racist killing'.

According to Radio 702, Honolulu police department's Allan Nagata claimed the officers believed they were in a fight for their lives and did not know if the suspect was armed.

It was only after shots were fired that the police identified themselves according to the bodycam footage.

AP News reported that Nagata acknowledged that the officers had not identified themselves but said that it was obvious they were police as they were in their uniforms and driving police cars.

The EFF released a statement on the 17th of April condemning the shooting. The political party is 'disgusted' by what they call a 'racist killing'.

Myeni had no criminal record and his friends and family have described him as a kind and caring man.

Earlier, Briefly News reported that Lindani Myeni was shot and killed by American police officers in Hawaii on Wednesday and social media users are demanding #JusticeForLindaniMyeni.

The reports that the rugby player attacked police officers and forced them to use deadly forces were met with disbelief by those who knew him.

The traumatic incident was captured on the body-cam worn by Potter who, according to the footage, thought she was using a taser and not a firearm. The murder of 20-year-old Wright resulted in unrest and protests in Minnesota, Minneapolis in the US.

Potter is being held at the Hennepin Country jail without bond and is reportedly waiting for her first court appearance.
