A sad picture of a lonely Queen Elizabeth sitting in a church all by herself while mourning her fallen husband Prince Philip has broken many hearts online.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away on Friday, 9 April and he was laid to rest in the royal vault in a funeral attended by family members, including Prince Harry who travelled from the United States.

In the photo that has since gone viral, the queen is sitting alone in St George’s Chapel during her deceased's husband's funeral service on Saturday, April 17.

It was not hard to tell she was still struggling to come to terms with the duke's death. Many on social media acknowledged she looked frail and in deep grief.

Her relatives had gathered in small family groups to mourn the prince.

"These pictures really bring home one of the horrible truths of the pandemic that there can be no tearful hugs with reunited family right at the time when you need it most,” a British journalist said.

Another Twitter user said the picture which was said to be the saddest image of Saturday made her shed tears.

“She looks so alone there, more a widow today than a queen.”

While saying goodbye to her late husband, the queen left a handwritten note in her husband's coffin, a beautiful tribute to their early days as lovers.

According to E! News, the note read in part, "I love you," which was fitting as the two, who met when the queen was only 13 years old, used to communicate in letters back in the day.
