A man named Ayo Ojeniyi has taken people on a trip down memory lane after sharing a photo of a Beetle car that was sold for R145 in 1982, 40 years ago.

Ojeniyi also shared the receipt of the car purchase and asked people what they could buy with such an amount of money today, and we know it's not much. In fact, one small packet of groceries costs more than that.

Reacting to the photo, a Facebook user identified as Aliyu Hamagam said the minimum wage in 1982 was R4.50, suggesting that a Beetle car was expensive back in the day.

In his words:

"In 1982, the national minimum wage was only [R4.50]. So you can understand what it means for one to raise about [R150] for a Beetle car."

Wale Keshinro wrote:

"Despite the fact VW Beetles were R145, how many family members owned cars in that era, unlike now. six out of 10 extended families produce multiple car owners."

"How many people could afford the Volkswagen in 1982? But today, that's what an average labourer earns at a construction site per day. There are more rich people today than we had in 1982."

In other news, a Mercedes-Benz reportedly belonging to one Alhaji Agyaa, a rich Ghanaian man in the 70s/80s, has been discovered after about 40 years of being hidden in a garage.
