South Africans took to social media in response to news that R65 million will be spent on 24 Cuban engineers hired by the Department for Water and Sanitation.

The Minister of Water and Sanitation Lindiwe Sisulu has maintained that the engineers are necessary and are no taking any jobs away from South Africans.

However, according to The South African, the labour union Solidarity was able to draw up a list of 120 South African candidates who could do the job just as well as the Cuban engineers.

IOL reported that engineers would be in South Africa for three years and would work to improve South Africans water delivery and storage infrastructure.

Twitter users took to the internet to share their opinions on the matter:

@landback_:

"Teachers and Nurses are from Zimbabwe
Doctors and Engineers are from Cuba
Spaza shop owners are from Somalia and Pakistan
Truck drivers are from Mozambique
Hair stylists are from Nigeria
Meanwhile 15 million educated South Africans are told “sorry no jobs”

@TomEatonSA:

"Next time the ANC wants to donate R65-million to Cuba, can I suggest a simple EFT rather than an elaborate public insult to South Africa's engineers?"

@errolbsk:

"When are we finishing paying whatever debt we owe Cuba? For how long will we be creating employment for Cuban foreigners at the expense of our own people?"

@mmodiba10:

"It's also not true that the Cuban Engineers are here to exploit us. The entire project will cost 64 million. Both beneficial for the two governments. When German engineers come here or other people from western countries it’s never an issue. Once it’s Russia or Cuba there’s a problem "

Cuban engineers to leave after 'skills transfer' to locals, says Lindiwe Sisulu

@MadiBoity:

"In 2020/1 SA Department of Health spent R239 million on Cuban doctors, SANDF spent R260 million on dodgy Covid vaccine & Lindiwe Sisulu has an appetite to spend R65 million on water engineers.
Do we have a corrupt relationship with Cuba under the disguise of historical ties?"

Earlier, Briefly News reported that Economic Freedom Fighters MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has created quite the buzz on social media with his latest post about Cuba. Ndlozi seemingly promoted Cuba by sharing a short and simple tweet regarding the country.

Ndlozi's tweet follows the news of 24 Cuban engineers who are being brought to South Africa on Friday, 23 April. A number of South Africans took to Ndlozi's replies section under the tweet to share their distaste for his views.

Ndlozi did not seem to respond to any of the negative comments nor did he pay any mind to any of the comments that supported his thoughts.
