Nearly a month ago, the ANC government had given corruption-accused Ace Magashule a month to resign from his position in the party. Up until now, Magashule had been very stern about where he stands when it comes to stepping aside.

Now there are only a few days left for him to resign and both the government and his many supporters are probably holding their breaths as they wait to see what Magashule's next move will be.

Meanwhile, a recent publication has revealed what Gwede Mantashe's stance is on the Ace Magashule debacle. According to Mantashe, Magashule has nothing else to do but to step down or else face suspension by the party.

“At the end of that period people are expected to resign, if not, the resolution is quite clear [that] the organisation can suspend any of them and then start a process," reads an excerpt from Mantashe's interview in the Mail & Guardian.

According to eNCA, however, Magashule had previously refused to step down until he was given the opportunity to meet with senior members of the ruling party.

Briefly News previously reported that with the clock ticking for ANC members facing charges to step aside, a defiant Ace Magashule says he will still be the party’s secretary-general when the 30-day ultimatum ends in two weeks. In an exclusive interview, Magashule told Briefly News that he would only step down when instructed to do so by ANC branches.

Magashule is among party leaders who were given 30 days by the National Executive Committee (NEC) - the highest decision-making body - to step down. With the noose tightening around his neck, Magashule says he is unshaken.

“We can’t allow the step-aside policy to be used by some to target their political opponents. We can’t allow some people to deliberately destroy our party.”
