North West province African National Congress leader Supra Mahumpelo has been handed a lifeline by Secretary-General Ace Magashule.

In a letter addressed to the party’s influential leader in the Bokone Bophirima province, Magashule suggests that Mahumapelo’s membership remains intact.

This comes after the former North West premier was suspended for five years by the ruling party, but it seems he still has a future as Magashule’s letter suggests.

According to the TimesLive, Magashule has penned a letter to Mahumapelo telling him that his membership remains “intact” by virtue of him appealing his five-year suspension.

It is also reported that the former Free State premier has indicated that Ace’s membership has stayed as he wrote in a communique dated April 29, 2021. Magashule wrote to the duo:

“In your letter, you have formally lodged your appeal against decision in terms of rule 25.36 of the constitution. Your appeal has been referred to the NDCA (national disciplinary committee of appeals). Your membership of the ANC remains intact.”

It is also reported that Magashule’s sentiments come after the ANC Mahumapelo and his co-accused, acting provincial ANC Women's League secretary Bitsa Lenkopane’s memberships were frozen for five years by the Interim Provincial Committee in the North West for sowing divisions in the party.

Briefly News has also gathered that the committee has also issued an order that both Mahumapelo and Lenkopane be set aside from the list of ANC public representatives.

In essence, this move has meant that Mahumapelo would have to step down from his parliamentary position of chairperson of the portfolio committee on tourism.

Meanwhile, The Citizen reported that the decision to sideline Mahumapelo is a double blow for the Jacob Zuma faction and the publication has also cited the fact Magashule is also facing the wilderness.

Friday, 30 April is Magashule’s last day as a key figure at Luthuli House, and while Mahumapelo has been slapped with a five-year suspension from the embattled ruling party.

Briefly News reported that the former has been suspended from the ruling party for five years following the decision of the provincial disciplinary committee (PDC) of the ANC.

Mahumapelo was suspended along with Lekonpane, the acting provincial ANC Women's League secretary in the North West.

The two were accused of sowing disunity within the party after they held parallel rallies in the North West. They were found guilty on charges of misconduct.

The rallies took place mere metres away from a rally organised by the North West's interim leadership in Mareetsane in December 2020.
