Haibo: Zuma Administration's R17 Million Unpaid Tax Bill Clears Out ANC's Coffers

- The ANC has been left reeling after SARS garnished R17 million in unpaid taxes from former president Jacob Zuma's administration

- This has left the ruling party in a precarious position as it is unable to pay staff and their financial woes might continue for six months

- During the 2017 tax year the ANC deducted R80 million in PAYE tax from employees but this was not paid on to SARS leaving the party with a hefty tax bill

The ANC is in dire financial straits after the South African Revenue Services claimed R17 million according to a report by the Sunday Times.

This has caused serious issues with the ruling party's cash flow leaving them unable to pay salaries at the end of April.

Luthuli House general manager Febe Potgieter confirmed this and said that the party might face financial challenges for the next six months.

SARS garnished R17 million which had been left unpaid from when former president Jacob Zuma was in power. According to The South African, the ANC owed SARS R80 million in PAYE (pay as you earn) tax.

The money had been deducted from employees salaries but was not paid to SARS which left the ANC with a hefty tax bill.

Earlier, Briefly News reported that the South African Revenue Services (SARS) has exceeded the revenue collection target set in February last year. The original target of R1.21 trillion was exceeded by R38 billion by 31 March.

The National Treasury first set the target at R1.425 trillion before Covid-19 impacted the economy in March last year. The target was revised down to R1.112 trillion in October before being increased to R1.212 trillion in this year's budget, delivered in February.

During the financial period, a total of R63 billion has been collected. This total includes R12 billion from large businesses and R16 billion from provisional taxpayers.

In other news, the Hawks have swept down on six people who allegedly tried to defraud SARS out of nearly R1 million.

Themba Mabandla Pila, 34, Sthembiso Nelson Ubisi, 40, Baby Martha Malomane, 39, Themba Edlon Ndlovu, 46, Patricia Nobuhle Ndlovu, 46, and Caswell Thokozani Shongw, 40 were arrested by the authorities on the 29th of April.

The six face charges of money laundering and contravening the Tax Administration Act, Act 28 of 2011.
