A Benoni couple had a truly rocky start to their marriage when they had a car accident on the way to their honeymoon.
Stanley and Heather Micallef had to spend some time in hospital, Briefly.co.za learned. Stanley suffered a serious concussion and Heather a broken jaw.
However, the couple did not let this inauspicious start affect their marriage. On 2 March, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Speaking to Benoni City Times, the two said they got married in Zimbabwe, which was then known as Southern Rhodesia.
On the same day, they set out by car to Mozambique before the mishap occurred. Stanley, 73, joked about his wife's broken jaw, which eventually healed:
Everyone said I had the perfect wife because she could not speak.
Heather, 71, joked back:
Even if you have your teeth all wired up, you can still talk.
Stanley and Heather eventually moved to Benoni in 1978 and had two sons, who now live in the UK. They also have one granddaughter aged 11.
The pair advised couples that good communication is the secret to having a long marriage. Stanley said:
If you can’t talk to each other, you can’t solve a problem; we can’t read people’s minds. Slamming a door doesn’t solve anything.
