Covid19: Minister Zweli Mkhize Warns South Africa of Deadly 3rd Wave

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has warned South Africa that the country is in the grip of a third deadly wave of Covid-19.

Mkhize cautioned that the number of new infections is rising signalling that the country is entering a third wave of the deadly virus.

According to News24, Mkhize was warned provinces to prepare for the 3rd wave by meeting regularly and implement contact tracking and quarantine as their main reaction to the new wave.

On Tuesday the country recorded 1 548 new cases and 71 new deaths due to the virus.

"As of today, the total number of confirmed #COVID19 cases is 1 599 272 the total number of deaths is 54 896 the total number of recoveries is 1 519 258 and the total number of vaccines administered is 414 372."

The third wave coincides with the detection of the new variant first identified in India which has made the virus more infectious according to Business Day.

The new variant, known as B.1.617.2 has spread to at least 17 other counties including Britain, the US and Iran.

Mkhize said that new variants are inevitable as the virus multiplies and mutates as it is passed from person to person.

Earlier, Briefly News reported that a Johannesburg woman has taken to social media to share her experience with getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Lebogang Mashile is a mother and breadwinner, so said she wanted to make sure to stick around for those who depended on her.

In the Twitter post, Mashile shared that she had taken her first jab in Soweto along with some healthcare workers. Although not a health professional herself, the poet claims to have received the vaccine to raise public awareness.

She also shared some useful information for those wanting to be approved for receiving the vaccine.

In other news, Covid-19 has definitely changed things for artists and how they perform and this was the case for Amapiano DJ Obza. DJ Obza had to perform in Windhoek, Namibia and was supposed to hand in his Covid-19 results to gain access into the country.

The DJ allegedly handed in fake Covid-19 results and was caught, resulting in him getting arrested. DJ Obza was arrested in Walvis Bay on Saturday.
