Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has blamed weak border security for the looting of foreign-owned shops in Soweto on Wednesday night.

This follows the ransacking of various stores in areas such as Dobsonville, Rockville, Zola and Meadowlands.

Mashaba has slammed national government, alleging that border security is inadequate.

Mashaba has weighed in on border security as well. Indeed, he has blamed illegal immigration for a number of Johannesburg's social problems. For example, he says that it compounds the city's drug problem.

The mayor has also called on government to tighten border control on a number of occasions.

His latest remarks on the topic come after weeks of tension in Johannesburg involving foreign nationals. For example, police and foreign nationals clashed in the CBD two weeks ago after police raided shops suspected of selling counterfeit goods, Briefly.co.za has gathered.

This was followed by more police busts last week. Since then, several Soweto residents have said that there is still much animosity in the community toward undocumented immigrants, particularly those who were involved in violent confrontations with police.

Additionally, some residents say that there is a feeling that foreigners are adding to people's economic strains by opening businesses where work is already hard to come by, according to The South African.
