Covid19 update: China sees spike, Germany records 1st case new variant

For the first time in nearly five months, China has recorded its biggest daily jump in Covid19 cases. This comes despite three cities being in lockdown, increased testing and several other measures to curb its spread.

According to reports on Wednesday, Beijing saw the most new cases, while a province in the northeast of the country also saw a rise in new cases.

In a statement released by China's National Health Commission, 115 new confirmed cases were reported in the mainland. The day before 55 were recorded.

According to the SABC, this was the highest daily increase since July 30.

Germany records 1st case of the new variant

Germany has reportedly recorded their very first case of the Covid-19 variant that has been wreaking havoc in the country, News24 reported. The first case comes after a family visiting South Africa returned home to Germany following their lengthy visit.

According to reports, upon their arrival in Germany, the family had all went into quarantine. Some days later, they had all tested negative for the virus. A week thereafter, however, one of the family members began experiencing mild symptoms of Covid-19, subsequently testing positive for the new and harsher variant.

The very same Covid-19 variant that has been seen in South Africa has been spotted in a number of other countries, namely Britain, Finland, France and Israel, local news publication, eNCA reports.

South Africa records 13 105 new cases in one day

South Africa has reportedly recorded an alarming 13 105 new cases in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of infections in the country up to 1 259 748.

Over the last 24 hours, 755 people have succumbed to Covid-19. A bulk of which are from Gauteng. This brings the South African death toll up to 34 334.

Yesterday the country reported 416 new deaths and today that number has almost doubled. The number of deaths daily is slowly climbing.

Meanwhile, Briefly.co.za recently reported that Gig technology company, M4Jam, surveyed 3000 of its workers, aged from 18 - 64, about their feelings toward the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines in Mzansi.

The company asked its jobbers if they would take the vaccine should it become available.

It stated that only 32% said they would take the doses and 58% shared that they prefer to wait and see whether it worked for others.

The survey found that 10% of the company's workers flat-out refuse to take the vaccine. The workers shared that some of their main concerns about the vaccine are possible side-effects, lack of trust in the government to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, concerns that the vaccines are too new and fears of actually contracting the virus from the vaccine itself.
