Lockdown Alcohol Ban Is Not Ending Any Time Soon, Mzansi Reacts

Since South Africa went into an adjusted Level 3 of the lockdown, alcohol was banned and citizens were displeased with the situation. People in the country have been hoping that alcohol will be allowed to be purchased soon but Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says that is not on the cards yet.

Dr Mkhize said that the liquor ban has been providing huge relief to hospitals and he hopes that the ban continues for a bit longer to fight the virus.

"There is actually a huge relief that has come from the suspension of the sale of alcohol because most of those trauma cases are linked to irresponsible consumption of alcohol, irresponsible behaviour based on the consumption of alcohol," said Mkhize.

Social media users in Mzansi have aired their frustrations with the liquor ban. Some people are just not understanding how it actually helps the Covid-19 situation in the country.

"Because of the alcohol ban, at stake are 165 000 jobs and in South Africa 165 000 jobs means more than 600 000 people who depend on those 165 000 people will be impacted adversely."

In other Covid-19 news, Briefly.co.za reported that the glass industry set to lose R1.5 billion amid the continued liquor ban. The national lockdown ban on liquor could see the nation's glass packaging industry taking another R1.5 billion knock.

This after the restrictions returned for the third time as part of the effort to reduce the strain on the healthcare system amid the current pandemic.
