Shortly after that, she became the regional treasurer of the party at the Abaqulisi branch, and in 2015, she was made a member of the ANC provincial executive committee.

Simelane-Zulu became a member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature in May 2014. In the same year, she became the legislature's Agricultural Portfolio Committee chair until 2019.
