Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has been ordered to apologise for his pro-Israel comments made during a webinar, entitled Two Chiefs, One Mission: Confronting Apartheid, last year. Reports say that the Judicial Conduct Committee found Mogoeng guilty and ordered him to apologise.

The Chief Justice mentioned during the webinar that due to his religion he had an 'obligation' to love Israel and to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Mogoeng is known for his strong Christian faith and beliefs.

Various complaints were made against Mogoeng following the webinar last year by different organisations. Mogeong has been given ten days to apologise.

According to City Press, the Committee said that Mogoeng's comments need to be retracted as it is important to maintain the public image of the Judiciary. A report by TimesLIVE stated that Mogoeng also cited Bible scripture.

Briefly.co.za previously reported on the Chief Justice after Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize laughed off the suggestion that Mogoeng warded off the AstraZeneca vaccine. Mogoeng had previously prompted outrage when he prayed against vaccines of the 'devil'.

However, Mkhize insists that the vaccine in question is far from evil while speaking during a media briefing:

“I did listen to Justice Mogoeng talking about the vaccine from the devil. I must say that I think in a particular language you can say so, but as far as I am concerned none of these vaccines are coming from the devil."

African Alliance, a health advocacy organisation, also lodged a formal complaint against Mogoeng Mogoeng with the Judicial Services Commission. This is in response to the Chief Justice's Covid-19 vaccine comments which earned him widespread backlash.

In a lengthy affidavit detailing the complaint, the African Alliance argued that the apex judicial figure had acted in a way which was unbecoming of his office, allegedly breaching the code of judicial conduct.

The Judicial Conduct Committee was urged to review the matter as a matter of urgency in order to protect investments in the vaccine.
