On this Mothers' Day of 2021, they commissioned Olivia When to design an interactive doodle from which users can click and send a card to their mothers.

The doodle features the letters that make the word GOOGLE, written on pieces of paper in different colours and pasted to a wall with tape.

Upon pressing play, two cards pop up from the virtual table and open up to smileys which are surrounded by yellow and red love hearts.

When a user moves the mouse over the graphics, the words 'Mother's Day 2021' appear on the screen.

"Today’s Doodle is popping up to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day," read part of a statement from Google regarding the artwork.

Mothers' day is an annual occasion celebrated globally every second Sunday of May.

Traditionally, it is a day set aside for individuals to celebrate their mothers for bringing forth to them as well as show gratitude for the sacrifices they made to raise them well.

It is believed that the day was first observed in the US when a woman named Anna Jarvis pushed for a day to honour her mother.

Three years after Anna's mom passed away, she held her memorial service in 1908 at the St Andrew’s Methodist Church, West Virginia.

Although Anna herself did not make it to attend the service, a telegram message highlighted the importance of the day.

A day that had begun as Anna's commemoration to her mother soon got embraced in the US and beyond the borders, becoming an annual and globally celebrated day.

In other news, a woman, Serena Torres, celebrated her first Mother's Day. However, her start to motherhood was somewhat difficult.

The 29-year-old mom gave birth while in a coma because of Covid-19. Her little girl spent a couple of weeks in NICU but is thriving now.
