Sandile Zungu has lifted the lid on alleged threats and intimidation surrounding the SAFA presidential election, claiming some football leaders have been forced to keep their support for him under wraps.
The AmaZulu owner is challenging incumbent Danny Jordaan at the SAFA elective congress in Johannesburg on Saturday, 12 September 2026.
SABC Sport reports that Zungu said some supporters feared being targeted if their allegiance became known.
“Look, I've got to respect people, if that's what they say and they demonstrate that if you are seen to be not supporting, we'll dismantle your region and we'll make sure that you are disqualified from going to elections,” he said.

SAFA supporters allegedly keeping quiet
Zungu said some individuals had chosen to publicly back Jordaan while privately supporting his campaign. He quoted one supporter as saying:
“I want you Mr Zungu but I also want to be on NEC... so the best is to pretend, sing, my president like everyone else but vote for the future.”
He said his campaign had accepted the situation and remained confident in those supporters.
Zungu raises concerns over regions
The SAFA presidential candidate also alleged that some regions had faced attempts to alter their leadership.
“Our legends here have been disqualified from participating in the forthcoming elections and we believe unjustly so,” he said.
Zungu added that legal consultations were under way regarding the disputed decisions.

AmaZulu King’s backing adds pressure ahead of SAFA vote
Briefly News previously reported that Sandile Zungu’s SAFA presidential campaign has received high-profile backing from AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini ahead of the 12 September 2026 election.
The King reportedly called on KwaZulu-Natal’s 11 SAFA regions to support Zungu.
