The Dutchman coached the team for four matches before Ruben Amorim took over as head coach.
Van Nistelrooy shared a moment with the fans after Sunday's 3-0 win over Leicester City, but his exit was confirmed the following morning after Amorim landed in England.
Van Nistelrooy's message to fans
On Friday afternoon, the former Red Devils striker shared an emotional message on social media expressing his gratitude to fans, players, and staff.

"It has been a privilege and honour to represent the club as a player, coach and manager, and I will always cherish the memories we have shared together," Ruud van Nistelrooy said via his X account.
He also wished the club well in future.
"Manchester United will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon - not only because I want the club to do well, but because you all deserve it! All the best and take care, Ruud."
Van Nistelrooy was named interim coach on October 28 following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag.
The legendary striker played for Man United between 2001 and 2006 and scored 150 goals, per Transfermarkt.
Garnacho's message to Ruud van Nistelrooy
Briefly News earlier reported that Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho sharing a beautiful tribute for Van Nistelrooy.
Garnacho was a regular under the Dutchman, scoring twice and assisting once. He expressed his gratitude to van Nistelrooy.
