"We don't want to host it… Take it somewhere else!!!"
Botswana cites financial constraints
The Botswana government's exit from the joint bid came after it declined to provide the financial guarantee required for participation. Authorities described hosting AFCON 2028 as not among the country's current priorities. Botswana also failed to submit the required bidding documents before the 14 September deadline, while South Africa and Zimbabwe proceeded with their own submissions.

The original three-country proposal had envisioned matches being played across all three nations, with Gaborone and Francistown among the proposed host cities. With Botswana's withdrawal, the joint bid now involves only South Africa and Zimbabwe.
SA's AFCON debate heats up online
Ngobese's post drew immediate attention on social media, with users taking opposing positions on whether South Africa should continue pursuing the tournament. Some agreed that the country should step back from the bid entirely.
Others countered that hosting a major continental football event carries significant economic benefits for local businesses and the broader economy. A separate view circulating in the discussion suggested Zimbabwe should be permitted to host the tournament on its own.

CAF opened the bidding process for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 AFCON tournaments in July 2026. The governing body confirmed that host selection would proceed according to its established bidding framework. No further announcement has been made regarding the timeline for a final decision on the 2028 edition.
