South Africa has been named Africa's most beautiful country in 2026 by global travel authority Rough Guides, making it the only African nation to feature among the world's 20 most beautiful countries.

The accolade recognises South Africa's rare combination of landscapes packed into a single destination. White-sand beaches, ancient mountain ranges, sweeping wildlife reserves, scenic road routes and one-of-a-kind floral scenery all contributed to the country earning its place on the prestigious list.

Western Cape leads the way

The Western Cape drew particular praise, with Cape Town's Table Mountain, dramatic coastlines and whale-watching opportunities singled out as standout features. The Garden Route, where mountains meet the ocean at nearly every turn, further cemented the province's reputation as one of the continent's most breathtaking regions.

Beyond the Cape, South Africa's mountain landscapes also impressed. The Drakensberg and the ancient Makhonjwa Mountains offer some of Africa's most dramatic scenery, reflecting a geological history stretching back billions of years.

Kruger National Park remained a major drawcard, offering visitors the chance to encounter the Big Five across vast, undisturbed wilderness. Then there is Namaqualand, which transforms seasonally from a dry, arid plain into a vivid carpet of wildflowers, creating one of the country's most distinctive natural spectacles.

The Rough Guides recognition is not the only international travel award South Africa has received this year. Cape Town also earned major honours at the World Travel Awards Africa 2026 adding further weight to the country's growing tourism profile.
