Media personality Basetsana Kumalo is turning 47 today and she has had quite an eventful career. She started from humble beginnings and then cemented herself as one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

Basetsana Kumalo is a businesswoman and philanthropist. Not only that, but she's a pageant titleholder and is loved by many South Africans. Briefly.co.za takes a look at three interesting facts about Bassie.

1. She has won more than one pageant

Many know Basetsana Kumalo as Miss South Africa 1994, but she has also won the Miss Soweto pageant at the age of 16. Her mother entered her into Miss South Africa and she went on to win the competition later.

Her win is seen as a key marker of democracy as this took place when apartheid was coming to an end in South Africa.

2. She has a broadcasting background

During her reign as Miss South Africa, Basetsana presented Top Billing. She has also presented on Metro FM but she did not continue because she was afraid of the spotlight. She hosted a show for three hours and then she decided that it was not for her.

Basetsana has a 50% stake in Tswelopele Productions, which has produced television shows such as Top Billing, Pasella and Seskohona.

3. She is extremely charitable

Basetsana Kumalo loves to give back to the community. Basetsana and her husband Romeo have launched the Romeo & Basetsana Kumalo Family Foundation, which helps children who are orphaned by AIDS and other related diseases.

She has also worked closely with overseas actress Salma Hayek to fight against neonatal and maternal tetanus in the world. Basetsana is also the spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund.
