GAUTENG —School administrators and district authorities could face severe sanctions if an ongoing probe confirms that earlier claims of sexual abuse at a Soweto technical institution were swept under the rug. The Gauteng Department of Education initiated the inquiry into Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation after fresh misconduct accusations emerged from the Emdeni township facility.
The latest inquiry stems from an August 7 referral to the Johannesburg Central District Dispute Management Office by the campus principal. An 11th-grade student filed a written grievance describing improper sexual comments from a teacher during the second term, a claim corroborated by a fellow classmate who observed the encounter. The accused staff member formally rejected the charge following a meeting in the principal's office.
However, investigators are looking beyond this single event to examine whether complaints dating back to 2022 were improperly handled or concealed. Student groups and local residents allege that multiple staff members have faced unaddressed complaints over several years.
Education MEC Lebogang Maile, who recently called for parents to step up, warned that any administrator or teacher found hiding misconduct, discouraging victims, or failing in their duty of care will be held accountable. The school previously received psychological intervention in April 2026 following a 12th-grade student's death. Authorities have instructed the public and media to keep all student identities confidential as the formal investigation continues.
