Family of Ofentse Mlambo Demands Answers After Kgosi Mampuru II Cleaner Dies in Hospital

TSHWANE — The family of 29-year-old Ofentse Mlambo is calling for full accountability from Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre after he died at Kalafong Hospital, having been admitted in a coma following a period of detention at the facility.

According to his relatives, Mlambo, who worked as a cleaner at the correctional centre where inmates allegedly pay R240 for a bed, was discovered inside officials' offices during the early hours of 10 July before being placed in a cell. The family alleges he was assaulted and that his health steadily worsened over the days that followed.

Family left in the dark during hospitalisation

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika from the family home, Mlambo's sister described how he was first taken to an internal healthcare facility, where he was under the care of a nurse identified as Mrs. Mavundla. Between Monday, 13 July, and Wednesday, 15 July, he was transferred to Kalafong Hospital in Tshwane, where he was admitted in a coma.

Throughout this period, no representative from the facility contacted the family to inform them of Ofentse's deteriorating condition, the reasons for his transfer, or his health status. His relatives were not notified that he was critically ill or being moved to an outside hospital. Ofentse subsequently passed away.

Family wants CCTV footage and staff records

The family has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the absence of communication, transparency, and accountability from facility management during the period Mlambo was hospitalised. They are now demanding a complete paper trail, access to CCTV footage from the facility, and a full breakdown of the staff members assigned to his care, including their ranks and shift schedules, in order to pursue justice.
