SOUTH AFRICA — Formal complaints and regulatory oversight requests have been lodged following the death of a police canine, Sky, who was put down due to severe physical trauma sustained inside a Roodeplaat holding area. The incident has drawn sharp criticism over administrative delays that kept the animal confined despite known health and behavioral risks.
Official documentation from late August 2026 highlighted that the dog suffered from extreme confinement anxiety, which had previously caused severe dental and facial self-harm during escape efforts. Medical staff had explicitly warned that remaining within the police system directly threatened the animal's well-being. Efforts by personnel to secure a temporary private placement pending permanent adoption reportedly stalled at the executive level.
Sky sustains fatal injuries
Following a final attempt to break free from her enclosure, the dog sustained double leg fractures. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed irreversible muscle tissue breakdown, localized necrosis, and systemic organ failure, leading veterinary staff to deem surgical intervention non-viable.

Ian Cameron, who chairs the Portfolio Committee on Police, has bypassed internal law enforcement channels to initiate criminal proceedings. The matter has been submitted to the South African Veterinary Council and the NSPCA’s Special Projects Unit for external review. An independent autopsy at Onderstepoort will be performed to compile a clinical record for the upcoming legal proceedings against responsible officials.
