On this throwback Thursday, Briefly.co.za recalls the buzz when Sipho Nunens first burst onto the scene for Mamelodi Sundowns.
Football pundits and experts are always looking for the next big thing – the next footballing genius or whizz.
As a result, the media are often quick to apply labels to young players with potential.
As an example in Africa, Mohamad Salah was touted as the Egyptian Messi very early in his career.
This was seemingly the case with Sipho Nunens when he burst on the scene as he was dubbed a midfield genius.
Even the late Cebo Maanyapelo introduced him as “The Sensational” during radio commentary whenever Nunens touched the ball.
The youngster played with a swagger for Mamelodi Sundowns as he displayed remarkable close control and dribbling skills.
Nunens was on track to make a big impact in South African football, but ill-discipline stifled his development.
Lured by the bright lights of Jozi, partying and alcohol became his focus, as opposed to football.
Briefly.co.za gathered that he’ll be grouped with the likes of Brendon Augustine, Skaapie Malatsi and Naughty Mokoena, as promising footballers who failed to live up to their potential.
