Cass began his career in August 1988, joining the Roodepoort Local Municipality as a firefighter. He steadily climbed the ranks, becoming a Senior Fire Fighter in 1990, a Leading Fire Fighter in 1995, and earning his promotion to Station Commander in 2001. Over the course of his career, he served at several stations across Johannesburg, including Hodgson Street, Berea, Hunters Hill and Florida Park Fire Station.

The City of Joburg EMS shared the news on Facebook under the hashtag #JoburgBravest, with memorial and funeral details yet to be confirmed at the time of posting. Those who worked alongside Cass described a man who gave generously of his time and knowledge. Whether mentoring junior firefighters or simply lending an ear to colleagues, he was widely regarded as someone who led by example and never turned away a person in need of guidance.

A former chaplain for the City of Johannesburg EMS, Rev. Frank Meulenbeld, recalled his fondness for Cass and the late commander's commitment to his work. Jerry Maycock, a firefighter who came on attachment from the United Kingdom in 1990 and 1992, remembered Cass as a "very keen, capable and competent young Firefighter" whose dedication carried him through the decades that followed.
