Madlanga Commission testimony put W/O Sander in the spotlight
Sander came to national attention through his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where he described a sustained campaign of intimidation and marginalisation that followed his exposure of a criminal drug syndicate connected to police officials and a R200-million cocaine theft.
Among the more striking details he revealed was that his personal coffee machine had been stolen from his office. Police management then subjected him to a polygraph test and falsely told him he had failed, in an apparent attempt to implicate him in the theft of his own property. The commission fully exonerated him.
His account resonated widely with South Africans, prompting a public crowdfunding campaign that raised more than R600,000 in his support.

The award drew swift reaction from South Africans who had followed his story closely.
