Briefly News, in partnership with Havas Red PR and the National Children’s Theatre (NCT), is giving 5 lucky readers a double ticket each to see the much-loved Aesop’s Fables live on stage.

The smash-hit production is back at the National Children’s Theatre in Parktown for the first time since 2021 and will run until 30 August 2026.

Aesop’s favourite stories come alive on stage

Directed by Devon Flemmer, the production brings together five of Aesop’s most enduring fables:

  • The Tortoise and the Hare
  • The Grasshopper and the Ants
  • The Lion and the Mouse
  • The Boy Who Cried Wolf
  • The North Wind and the Sun

The stories are brought to life by a dynamic four-actor ensemble featuring Aphelele Sidelo, Langa Mathuthu, Lihle Ngubo and Katelyn Forbay, with each actor taking on multiple roles in a fast-paced and highly physical performance.

“I want young audiences to come to the theatre and experience the joy and magic of live storytelling,” says director Devon Flemmer.

“Parents and children alike will be entertained, enthralled by the characters, and encouraged to engage, play along, and immerse themselves in the world of the stories.”

The production also features colourful costumes and an innovative set designed by Dr Sarah Roberts, while Christine Ludwig leads the musical direction, vocal arrangements, coaching and sound design.

A fun outing with lessons children can take home

Aesop’s Fables offers more than an entertaining day at the theatre.

Each of the five stories ends with a clear, age-appropriate lesson, touching on values such as patience, perseverance, honesty and kindness and giving parents and children something to talk about long after the curtain comes down.

The production also creates a natural connection between theatre and classroom learning.

“Considering Aesop’s Fables is a staple of early-grade literacy curricula, the production offers a natural tie-in to classroom learning as what is taught is brought to life on stage,” says Belinda Germeshuizen, NCT’s COO and incoming CEO.

The five short, fast-paced stories have been designed to keep young audiences engaged, combining lively music, dynamic staging and quick character transformations in a production that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
