Deon Fourie’s chances of joining the Springboks for their upcoming Nations Championship campaign have been thrown into doubt after a hamstring injury ruled him out of the Stormers’ next United Rugby Championship (URC) fixture. The veteran forward sustained the injury during his team’s 52-40 victory over the Scarlets at Cape Town Stadium last week.

The 40-year-old’s condition comes at a crucial time, with Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus expected to announce his squad for the end-of-year international campaign this week.

Deon Fourie faces weeks on the sidelines

According to SA Rugby Magazine, Stormers skills coach Labeeb Levy confirmed on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, that Fourie would miss Saturday’s encounter against Ulster.

“He’s not playing this weekend, that we can guarantee,” Levy said.

He explained that hamstring injuries could require four to six weeks of recovery, although some cases take longer. Levy also indicated that surgery did not appear necessary, with Fourie expected to undergo treatment and rehabilitation.

“From what I remember of the medical report, an operation wasn’t necessary, which is good,” Levy said.
“Obviously it needs conservative management and treatment as well as going through all the various rehab protocols.”

Springboks tour hopes face a setback

Fourie’s hamstring problem came at a crucial stage for South Africa, with the Springboks preparing to face Italy, France and Ireland before the Nations Championship finals weekend in late November.

The Stormers veteran strengthened his international case with his performances at hooker during the recent Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series, serving as Malcolm Marx's back-up.

His latest setback followed a difficult period marked by knee, ankle and serious bicep injuries. Those problems had previously cast doubt over whether he would return to the international stage.

After appearing in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, Fourie earned another Springbok call-up in August 2026. He went on to feature in four matches against the All Blacks, with South Africa winning every game.

However, the length of his recovery remained uncertain, leaving his availability for the upcoming Tests in question as the Springboks prepared to finalise their squad.

Deon Fourie’s honest admission after becoming the oldest Springbok

Briefly News previously reported that Deon Fourie became the oldest Springbok ever to play in a Test, surpassing Victor Matfield’s long-standing record during South Africa’s 33-26 victory over New Zealand on 29 August 2026.

The veteran hooker admitted he was nervous about his age before the match, but he was relaxed when asked how his body felt afterwards.
