  • A viral Instagram video revealed that actor Hlomla Dandala and his team developed a coin-sized panic button designed to mobilise nearby strangers to a woman in danger within three minutes
  • The device, inspired by the taxi rank warning call 'Vimba', would alert every phone within 100 metres and stream live audio and video to the cloud
  • The team allegedly faced stolen ideas, bribery demands, and an armed confrontation at a lawyer's office before shelving the project

A tech creator's Instagram video has ignited outrage across South Africa after revealing that veteran actor Hlomla Dandala quietly developed a community-powered panic device aimed at tackling gender-based violence, only to shelve it after a terrifying series of setbacks.

The reel, posted by @techwithlesedi, breaks down how Dandala, known for his roles in Isidingo, Jacob's Cross, Scandal, and The River, led a small team that spent time inside prisons interviewing convicted perpetrators of GBV. Two patterns kept emerging: many offenders described entering a rage state where outside intervention could have interrupted the attack, and the window between first contact and assault was consistently around three minutes. That became the team's benchmark.

The 'Digital Vimba' that never launched

The result was a wearable button roughly the size of a five-rand coin, designed to be hidden on the body. Pressing it would not only contact police and armed response, but simultaneously push alerts to every smartphone within 100 metres. Willing bystanders would see how many others were responding, triggering a cascade effect. Nearby phones would begin recording audio automatically, and camera feeds would stream to the cloud. The concept borrowed directly from the taxi rank tradition of shouting "Vimba," a call that brings an entire rank running.

The video explains that the app never made it to any store. According to Dandala, pitches for funding were repeatedly rejected, and elements of the idea were allegedly copied by others. A senior figure reportedly dismissed the project on the grounds that it originated from men. An NGO working with survivors also turned the team away.

Things escalated when a senior government security official allegedly demanded R5 million for himself and another R5 million for a political organisation in exchange for support. The team refused. Shortly after, armed men entered their lawyers' offices in Northcliffe, demanding to know which intelligence agency they were working for. The team talked their way out and decided the project was too dangerous to continue. The device now sits unused.
